I-Shou University, in collaboration with Centre for Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research (CACLER) of the University of Hong Kong, National Kaohsiung Normal University, jointly organized the Fourth International School Chinese Language Education Conference and Workshop on 3-5 November 2016 at Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The main objectives were to promote research and practice in Chinese language education in the international school context, and to provide a platform for scholars and educators to exchange thoughts and share experiences.
After four years of continuous efforts, this Conference has become a prominent annual gathering that brings together participants with common interests and professions from numerous international schools as well as educators from higher educational institutions in the region. This year, the theme of the Conference and Workshop was “Unpacking Global Literacy and Multiple Texts”. It covered the core areas of teaching Chinese language and literature, including teacher professional development, ICT in teaching and learning, cross-cultural teaching and cultural education, pedagogies and transformation, as well as international education.
Three keynote speeches were presented during the Conference. Prof. Oon Seng TAN, Director of National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, spoke about “Teacher Learning: From Didactics to Dialogos”, Prof. Kathy G. SHORT, Professor of Teaching, Learning, and Sociocultural Studies, University of Arizona, President of National Council of Teachers of English, and Director of Worlds of Words, shared her insights in the speech entitled ‘Critical Issues in Global Literacy and Literature’. The third keynote speaker, Mr. Jun Yen TSAO, presented his views in “Artist of Children’s Literature”. Apart from 19 teacher-held hands-on workshops featured in the event, the Conference also included 30 peer-reviewed paper presentations which enhanced our understanding of the field of education and facilitated exchange of ideas embracing the Conference theme. We believe their knowledge and valued experience would enhance further thoughts and understanding among the participants.
The Conference was a great success. It attracted the participation of 179 teachers and educational researchers from 21 countries/regions, including the Philippines, Bangladesh, Sierra Leone, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mexico, New Zealand, Mainland China, Taiwan, U.S.A., Hong Kong, U.K., Thailand, Singapore and Australia. The next Conference will be held in 2017 at Shanghai, China.
