The skills of CACLER members in the field of teaching and learning of Chinese characters afford insights into how variations of Han characters feature and are taught in a number of Asian languages, such as Korean, Japanese, Mainland Chinese, Singaporean, Taiwanese and Vietnamese. To encourage further internationalization of the CACLER and to foster interdisciplinary and scientifically complementary research, our Centre has co-hosted the 5th International Conference on Han Characters Education and Research (第五屆〝漢字與漢字教育〞國際研討會) at Korea University, Seoul, on 11 – 12 July 2014. This series of conferences are our collaborative partnerships including academic units and institutions in this field covering four major districts in Asia: The Korea Society of Education in Chinese Characters and Classics; Society for Korean Classical Chinese Education; Beijing Normal University; National Kaohsiung Normal University, Taiwan; Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, Taiwan; and National Taitung University of Taiwan. It aims to bring together scholars, researchers and practitioners from different countries to discuss and share their ideas, perspectives, experiences and research findings of teaching and learning of Chinese characters.
The Conference was a great success, with over 180 delegates from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, USA, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Macau and Hong Kong, and around 90 presentations have been conducted. Prof. SK Tse was one of the Keynotes while Dr. MSK Shum and Dr. JWI lam were invited to present at the featured sessions. In addition, some of our Faculty colleagues, Centre staffs and research students also took part in the paper presentation sessions. They include Dr. FP Ng, Dr EKY Loh, Dr. CP Tai, Mr. SY Hui, Ms. YL Chan, Mr. HW Ng and Ms. MY Wong. The conference papers, which will be undergone a peer-reviewed process, will be recommended for publishing at a post-conference journal in South Korea.
