In the area of teaching and learning of Chinese characters in multilingual and multicultural context, the CACLER researchers have aligned themselves with 9 academic units / tertiary institutions in China, Korea and Taiwan to co-host the 6th International Conference on Han Characters Education and Research (第六屆〝漢字與漢字教育〞國際研討會) at Hangzhou on 8-10 July 2015. It aims to bring together scholars, researchers and practitioners from different countries to discuss and share their ideas, perspectives, experiences and research findings of either Han character education and research or teaching and learning of Chinese for non-native learners in the multilingual and multicultural context.
This series of international conferences is our collaborative partnerships with academic units and institutions in this field covering four major districts in Asia since 2011: Ethnic Chinese Classic Texts and Characters Research Centre, Beijing Normal University; National Kaohsiung Normal University; Taitung University; Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages; Quemoy University; Korea Society of Education in Chinese Characters and Classics; Society for Korean Classical Chinese Education; Society of Korean literature in Classical Chinese; and CACLER.
The Conference has attracted over 120 education researchers and frontline teachers from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, China, Macau and Hong Kong, and over 70 presentations have been conducted.
Renowned scholars from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and China were invited to deliver keynotes speeches embraced the Conference themes. They include:
l Dr. Chin Chee Kuen, Executive Director of Singapore Centre for Chinese Language, Nanyang Technological University delivered a speech entitled ‘Analysis of Sinagpore’s Chinese Language Course and Teaching Program: Frequency of Singapore Students’ Use of Han- Characters’;
l Dr. Chun Chen-Cheng, Director of Graduate Institute of Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language, National Kaohsiung Normal University delivered a speech entitled ‘Language Learning—From Monolingual to Bilingual Reading and Writing Plans: Swing and Exploration for 25 Years’;

Prof. Eiji Matsuoka, Tokyo Gakugei University delivered a speech on ‘Publication and Outlook of The Grand Dictionary of Ideographic Characters (汉字海) and Standardization and Localization of Asian Han Characters’;

Prof. Kim Wangkyu, Professor of Korea National University of Education and the President of the Korea Association for Han-Character and Classical Written Language Education delivered a speech on ‘Situation of Han Character education and curriculum at beginner’s level in South Korea’;
l Dr. Lam Wai Ip, Associate Professor of Faculty of Education, HKU delivered a speech entitled ‘Network Analysis of the Components of Modern Chinese Characters’
l Prof. Ren Xiang, Director of Institute of Chinese Language Education, Beijing Normal University delivered a speech entitled ‘Some perspectives on developing teaching materials of Chinese characters at Primary level’;

Dr. Song Pyung Nyul, President of Society for Korean Classical Chinese Education and Associate Professor of Yeungnam University, Korea delivered a speech entitled ‘Relationship between the Chinese character knowledge of high school students in Korea and their educational achievement’;
l Prof. Tsai Kenhsiang, Professor and Director of the Institute of Chinese Classics, National Kaohsiung Normal University delivered a speech entitled ‘Some Examples of the Application of Scientific Ideas in the Teaching of Classical Chinese Writings’;
l Prof. Tse Shek Kam, Director of Centre for Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research, Faculty of Education, HKU delivered a speech entitled ‘Relation between Children’s Oral Chinese and Han Characters Learning’;
l Mr. Zhang Tianruo, former Researcher of National Institute of Education Sciences, PRC delivered a speech on ‘An Overall Look at Han-Character Education in Mainland China’;
In addition, some of our Faculty colleagues and research students also took part in the paper presentation sessions. They include Dr. FP Ng, Dr EKY Loh, Dr. CP Tai, Ms. KF Lee, Ms. WS Yung, Ms. TM Cheung, Mr. KW Liu, Ms. XQ Hu and Mr. TH Leung. The conference papers, which will be undergone a double-blind peer-reviewed process, will be recommended for publishing in a journal in South Korea. The next conference will be scheduled in early of 2017 in Taiwan.
