The book entitled “On the Learning of Chinese”was launched at the University of Hong Kong on 10 March 2011. The book, which is sponsored by the HKU Strategic Research Theme Fund, is with the use of Theory of Variation as the primary learning framework to study the relationship between the learning and teaching of Chinese.
Abstract of the book:
Many people find Chinese a hard language to learn. Using the Theory of Variation as the primary learning framework, the authors of this book conducted a number of large-scale and robustly-designed studies to investigate the relationship between the learning and teaching of Chinese. The authors believe that there are effective ways to become skilled in Chinese and that learning Chinese can be pleasurable and interesting. They provide empirical evidence for educators, parents, policymakers and readers interested in Chinese language education. They also illuminate the path to the mastery of Chinese in schools and how Chinese should be taught in today’s world.
Prof. S. K. Tse, one of the Authors of the book and Director of CACLER, introduced the background of the book and the ways of learning Chinese Characters.
Prof. K. M. Cheng, HKU, introduced the “Strategic Theme” of the book.
Dr. C. K. K. Chan, HKU, gave us the introduction of learning science.
Prof. F. Marton, Professor Emeritus, University of Gothenburg, introduced the Theory of Variation.
Dr. W. W. Ki, HKU, briefed about the learning tones.
Dr. H. C. Lam, HK Institute of Education, explained the importance of Orthographic Awareness in learning Chinese.
Dr. A. Leung introduced Learning Chinese Words.
Dr. W. M. Cheung, HKU, explained the ways of enhancing creativity in Chinese Writing.
