Press Conference to release findings on efficient learning and teaching of Chinese characters for children

There have been three major problems of memorizing, writing and pronouncing Chinese characters. Some children hate learning Chinese language because of these difficulties. Parents and teachers in Hong Kong are concerned about how children start to learn Chinese characters and how the curriculum of children’s education should be planned and implemented.

Sponsored by the Quality Education fund, the HKU Faculty of Education has launched a teaching programme and conducted a survey related to efficient learning and teaching of Chinese characters for children and the development of competence in reading and writing Chinese characters which aims at helping children to learn Chinese characters joyfully and efficiently, training them to read and write Chinese characters and thus facilitating the acquisition of good reading and writing skills. Professor Tse Shek Kam, Director of Centre for Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research (CACLER) of the Faculty of Education and the project’s principal investigator, released today (April 2) results of the research.
