Teacher Professional Development Courses on Understanding and Interpreting the New Senior Secondary Chinese Language Curriculum
CACLER has been conducted nine Teacher Professional Development Courses on Understanding and Interpreting the New Senior Secondary Chinese Language Curriculum (funded by EMB) from Oct to Dec 2006 with over 260 Chinese language teachers participated. This series of courses aims at supporting the implementation of the NSS Chinese language curriculum by enhancing teachers’ knowledge and understanding of the curriculum, and developing their capacity in planning and implementing it in their own schools. The instructors included Mr. Joseph Lam, Dr. Albert Chung, Dr. Mark Shum, Prof. S. K. Tse, Mr. W. K. Chan, Ms. Ada Poon and Ms. Chloe Chu. The content of the courses is as follows:
PART I. INTRODUCTION TO THE CURRICULUM
(developed and delivered by persons appointed and remunerated by the EMB)
PART II. PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A SCHOOL-BASED CURRICULUM
  1. Introduction to School-based curriculum
    • Reflecting on the strengths and constraints in the schools’ own contexts – at school, teacher and student levels
    • “Central curriculum” and school-based curriculum development
    • Managing the curriculum – roles of the principals, panel chairperson and teacher
  2. Integration between Junior and Secondary levels, compulsory and elective module, Chinese key learning areas and other non-Chinese learning areas
    • The Compulsory Part and the Elective Part – design principles, integration of / intertwining between two parts, developing learning modules, options to be offered in the Elective Part
    • Interface between Junior and Senior Secondary stages
    • Collaboration within the Chinese Language Education Key Learning Area (KLA) and cross-KLA links
  3. Implementation of a School-based Curriculum
    • Planning for a balanced and flexible curriculum
    • Progression of studies and time allocation
  4. Resources and Human Resources Development
    • Enhancing capacity of the school and teachers for curriculum change – professional development, school networking and learning community
    • Resource development and management
    • Action planning and evaluation
PART III. LEARNING, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT IN THE CURRICULUM
  1. Introduction to Learning, Teaching and Assessment
    • Learning, teaching and assessment – building on strengths
    • Selection and adaptation of learning and assessment activities to promote initiatives
  2. Approaches to Learning and Teaching
    • Selection of teaching approaches – teaching as direct instruction, teaching as enquiry, teaching as “co-construction”
    • Catering for learners’ diversity / differences
    • Facilitating students’ independent learning / self-directed learning

Each course has five 3-hour sessions, consisting of 9-hour lecture and 6-hour workshop.

The workshops provided a platform for participating teachers coming from different schools to share their school-based experience and points of views
